## In a Nutshell

**What is it?** A beginner-friendly, traditional Japanese tea ceremony where you get to wear an authentic kimono in a traditional Kyoto townhouse.

**Why Go?** It’s an amazing all-in-one package. You get the full experience of being professionally dressed in a kimono, learning about tea culture, and then you can wear the kimono to explore Kyoto for the rest of the day.

**Perfect For:** Couples, solo travelers, families, and anyone looking for a memorable and beautiful cultural photo opportunity.

**Time Needed:** The ceremony and dressing takes about 90 to 120 minutes.

## An Authentic Cultural Experience, Made Easy

Kyoto is famous for its deep culture, and Maikoya makes it easy for travelers to jump right in. They offer fun, welcoming cultural workshops designed for international visitors, hosted in beautiful, traditional Japanese townhouses (machiya).

The experiences are led by friendly, English-speaking staff who make everything feel simple and enjoyable. You can relax and have a great time without any pressure.

## What to Expect at Maikoya

The Kimono Tea Ceremony is their most popular offering and usually follows a few simple steps:

1

### Choose Your Kimono

You’ll start by picking your favorite design from a wide selection of colorful and traditional kimonos.

2

### Get Dressed for the Occasion

Professional staff will help you get dressed properly, which is an experience in itself! They also provide simple hairstyling with beautiful accessories to complete the look.

3

### The Tea Ceremony

In a traditional tatami mat room, an instructor will explain the history and meaning behind the ceremony. It’s a hands-on experience where you’ll watch a demonstration before whisking your own bowl of matcha (green tea) to enjoy with Japanese sweets.

4

### Explore Kyoto in Your Kimono

One of the best parts is that after the ceremony, you can wear your kimono to explore the city. You just need to return it by their closing time, which is usually around 6:00 PM.

## Our Take

We like recommending this when someone wants a polished, beginner-friendly introduction to Kyoto culture without needing prior knowledge. It is a strong choice for visitors who want a hands-on experience that also leaves room for memorable photos and an easy rest-of-day itinerary.

### Important Note on Maiko

The standard Kimono Tea Ceremony is led by a tea master. Meeting a Maiko (an apprentice Geisha) is a separate, premium experience that Maikoya also offers, but it must be booked specifically.
